The streaming world continues its transformation into the new cable bundle.
Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced that they’ll be launching a bundle this summer that includes Disney+, Hulu and Max. The two companies haven’t announced pricing or a specific launch date, but it sounds like this will work similarly to the existing Disney Bundle — it will be a way to access three separate services for a single subscription price, with ad-supported and ad-free tiers.
There are more bundles on the way, with Paramount reportedly exploring ways to bring its Paramount+ service together with NBCUniversal’s Peacock. And then there’s a joint sports venture from Fox, Disney and Warner due in the fall.
On one level, this is good news for consumers who may have been stretched thin by all the streaming services launched in the last few years, who are now looking to achieve profitability by cutting costs and raising prices. But it’s hard to escape the feeling that streamers are just reinventing cable — another pricey list of countless channels that you end up buying together.
